Agile Release Planning Workshop

Workshop

One value of the Agile manifesto is Responding to change over following a plan. Whether it’s Sprint Planning, Release Planning or Portfolio Planning, the plan should be determined by what we already know, and as we learn more, it should be open for change. Long-term planning using assumptions will not get us to where we need to go. What makes Agile so successful is its ability to respond. It responds quickly to change and promotes continuous development. At the same time, it’s important that we always focus on our Release Goal to ensure we’re working towards a mutually accepted outcome, even when the unexpected can throw things off.

This is where our Agile Release Planning Workshop comes into play. Release Planning is a process in which a team finalizes their release goal based on what they know from the business and what the team thinks is possible within the given release timeframe. Our workshop will teach you how to use the Story Map as a tool to conduct release planning sessions. You’ll learn how you can make adjustments on the fly and still meet the business goal.

What will I learn?

  • We’ll teach you exactly what a Story Map is and how use it.
  • Next, we’ll walk you through creating a Release Team and how to decide a Release Time.
  • Then, we’ll get into the following topics:
    • Defining a “Persona” and how to write a Persona profile.
    • How to come up with user journeys and map them in Story Map.
    • Defining “Epics” and how to identify and map them in Story Map.
    • Defining a “Feature” and how to list them in Story Map.
    • Defining a “Release Goal” and how to write a SMART release goal.
    • Moscow Prioritization.
    • Sizing without detail requirements (T-shirt sizing).

(Optional: Follow-up coaching or training based on team’s specific needs)

What is the outcome

The outcome, not the output, is the most important aspect of any project. Properly defining your Release Goal in the form of a business outcome will keep your business stakeholders happy. This workshop teaches you how to make the most of Story Map, which will in turn, give you the best chance at defining your Release Goal
